Dear Lighthouse: A Summer of Illumination, Ecology, and Shared Connection

As the beam of the lighthouse sweeps across the open water, it illuminates more than just the nocturnal horizon it reveals the interconnectedness of our fragile world. Spending my summer immersed in the history and ecology of this coastal beacon has been a profound lesson in resilience, stewardship, and wonder.

In this place, environmental awareness and sustainability are not abstract concepts, but a lived rhythm. Standing beside the ancient keeper’s tower, my perspective expanded through conversations with visitors from 16 different nationalities, each bringing a unique thread to a shared global dialogue.

Deepening my understanding of the local ecosystem offered a powerful reminder of nature’s intricate designs:

• Posidonia Meadows: Understanding how these underwater forests anchor our seas, sequester carbon, and shelter marine life.
• Endangered Birdlife & Flora: Observing rare avian species and adaptive, unusual plant life thriving against coastal winds.
• Maritime History: Reflecting on the lighthouse as an enduring symbol of guidance, safety, and human devotion.

The heart of education lies in genuine human connection. Reading through our visitors book and discovering a handwritten note addressed “Dear Lighthouse” praising my role as a guide and even inviting me to teach at the International School of Amsterdam served as a deeply moving reminder of how shared learning creates lasting ripples.

Immersing myself in the memory of the stones, the salt in the air, and the quiet dignity of preservation has created remarkably fertile ground for my imagination. As the upcoming school year approaches, I return carrying new depth, fresh knowledge, and a rekindled commitment to guiding others with the same steady clarity as the light atop the tower.
